Find a room using a school map

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For primary students who can point to rooms on a picture map at the table but do not use a map to get somewhere. Present levels in matching photos to places and in following a route with an adult decide fit.

Baseline
Pick five rooms at different distances and record whether the student finds each on the map, points to a route, and arrives without adult direction. An opportunity counts only when all three happen.
Tips
A school map is the first real map most students use and links map skills to independence. Keep the same map through the year. Students with vision needs may use a tactile map; the TVI or O&M specialist helps build it.
Limits
Familiar routes may be walked from memory; include a room the student rarely visits. The goal does not cover reading a map key or directions in the abstract.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when given a simple school map with picture symbols and asked to lead the adult to a named room, the student will find the named room on the map, point to the route, and walk to the room while holding the map independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
