Shift from a preferred topic when the activity moves on
When to use this goal
For students whose present levels show a favorite topic returning in every conversation and lesson, even after a redirection. For students with strong interests. Keep the goal about shifting, not about removing the interest.
- Baseline
- During several activities, record each topic shift away from the preferred topic and whether the student returned to it within the activity. Count returns per activity; that number shows the baseline and later the progress.
- Tips
- Each topic shift is one opportunity. Met means no return to the preferred topic for the rest of the activity (or for 10 minutes in long activities) after the shift. A scheduled topic time makes the shift easier and should be honored. Score returns after the agreed window as a new opportunity.
- Limits
- Strong interests are a strength; the goal targets timing, not the interest. Peers may invite the topic back; note those cases.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
