Return tools to the shadow board
When to use this goal
For students in career-tech shops, culinary labs, art rooms, or job sites who leave tools where they used them, which slows the next person and can be unsafe. The student should already use the tools safely. Present levels, not grade, decide the number of tools tracked.
- Baseline
- During two or three class periods, track each tool the student uses and whether it was returned to its spot before the next task. A glance at the board shows gaps. Note tools that have no clear spot.
- Tips
- Shadow boards make the data almost free: an empty outline is a missed return. Count each tool use as one opportunity. Safety storage (blades, hot tools) follows the shop's rules and is taught directly.
- Limits
- Shared tools used by several students are hard to attribute; track tools checked out to the student. Does not measure using the tools.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after using a tool in a career-tech shop with a shadow board or labeled tool wall, the student will return each tool used to its outlined or labeled spot before starting the next task independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed class periods, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Organization.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
