Make a plan for an unstructured period and follow it
When to use this goal
For students whose present levels show study halls, free periods, or indoor recess drift by with nothing done or with conflict. Fits any unstructured time in the schedule.
- Baseline
- Observe three to five unstructured periods and record what the student did in the first 5 minutes and whether anything was finished. Ask the student afterward what they had meant to do.
- Tips
- Each unstructured period is one opportunity. Met means a two-item plan is written or stated within the first 3 minutes and the first item is finished or worked on until the period ends. Acceptable items include homework, reading, a quiet activity, or a social plan.
- Limits
- Plans for social time are harder to score; agree on what counts. Periods shorter than 15 minutes may not fit this goal.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
