Record work status at each watch vibration
When to use this goal
For older students whose present levels show long stretches of drifting during independent work and who carry a phone or wear a watch that can vibrate silently. Fits students who already use a paper self-monitoring form with an adult cue and are ready to drop the adult. Present levels decide the interval.
- Baseline
- Set the device and give the form with no further coaching for three work periods. Count the vibrations and the marks made within 30 seconds. Check a few marks against what an adult saw at the same moment so you know whether the marks are honest before raising the target.
- Tips
- Each vibration is one opportunity; met means a mark within 30 seconds. Define working in one line on the form (writing, reading the assigned text, or using the task materials). Let the student choose the device and interval once the routine is steady; the form is the data sheet, so adults only spot-check accuracy.
- Limits
- Measures responding to the prompt, not how much work got done. Some schools restrict phones; get the device approved in the IEP. Students may mark yes out of habit; spot-check agreement monthly.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 45-minute independent work period with a watch or phone set to vibrate every 5 minutes, the student will mark yes or no on a self-monitoring form within 30 seconds of each vibration to record whether they were doing the assigned task independently in at least 8 of 9 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed work periods, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 3 of 9 opportunities.

Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Monitoring.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 9 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
