Reduce switches to non-class apps during study time
When to use this goal
For students who work on a laptop or tablet and often open games, video, or social apps during study time, and who are willing to log each switch. Present levels decide the length of the study block.
- Baseline
- Use the device history or a classroom monitoring screen for three study blocks to count switches before the log starts. Compare the student's log with the history for the first few blocks to see how honest and accurate the log is.
- Tips
- Count a switch each time a non-class app or site is opened. Build in a planned break with the student's choice of app so the goal is about timing, not never. Review the log together and let the student set the next target.
- Limits
- Device histories miss phones; agree on what is counted. Logging alone rarely holds without a planned break and a reason the student cares about.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 45-minute study hall or independent work block on a school device, with a switch log open beside the work, the student will reduce opening a non-class app, game, or site to no more than 2 times per 45-minute study block, while logging each switch with the time on a switch log, on 4 of 5 observed study blocks, as measured by direct observation collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 8 times per 45-minute study block.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Monitoring.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 45-minute study block.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
