Rate class-start readiness and pick a support
When to use this goal
For students whose rough mornings or rough periods show up as lost work time, and who can use a simple 1 to 4 readiness scale. Present levels decide the scale wording; the scale should describe readiness to work, not emotions to report.
- Baseline
- For a week, ask for a rating at the start of each observed period and record whether the student rated, and whether low ratings led to a support choice. Note which periods bring low ratings; that pattern may point to a schedule or setting change.
- Tips
- Each class start is one opportunity; met means a rating, and a support choice when the rating is low. Any honest rating is accepted. The data also tell the team which periods need adjusting, which matters as much as the student's part.
- Limits
- A rating is not a promise of a good period. If low ratings are frequent, look at the cause with the team; this goal is not a substitute for counseling or a behavior plan.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, at the start of each class period, with a 1 to 4 readiness scale on the desk or in the planner, the student will mark a readiness rating from 1 to 4 and, when the rating is 1 or 2, choose a listed support (water, a two-minute break, a quick talk with an adult, a starting task) before beginning the lesson work independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by direct observation collected daily, summarized weekly.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Monitoring.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
