Take two-column notes during a lecture
When to use this goal
For students whose present levels show lecture notes that are blank, a few words, or an attempt to write everything. Fits classes with regular teacher talk. A copy of the slides can be an accommodation alongside this goal.
- Baseline
- Collect notes from two or three lectures with no instruction and score them. Compare with the teacher's outline to see what was missed. Check writing speed; slow handwriting may call for typed notes.
- Tips
- Write descriptors for each row. Teach abbreviations and the rule of short phrases before expecting row 2. The summary (row 4) should be written within a few minutes of the lecture's end. Pre-written topics are a support that fades.
- Limits
- Lecture pace drives note quality; fast talkers make this unfair. Students with slow handwriting may need typing or a slides copy instead of this goal.
