Tackle a home chore at the scheduled time

When to use this goal

For transition-age students building independent living habits who can do household tasks but wait for a family member to tell them each time. The family and student choose the chores together. Present levels and family priorities, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
Ask the family to track one week of scheduled chores: whether the student started on their own within 5 minutes, after one reminder from a family member, or not at all. A simple checkmark sheet on the fridge or a shared phone note works. Pair with observation in the school living lab.
Tips
Seven scheduled chores a week is one per day; adjust to the family's routine. Keep the family log to a checkmark so it gets filled in. The school living lab gives observed data to check the home log. Let the student set the reminder wording.
Limits
Home data depend on families having time to log; do not require it if it adds strain. Does not measure chore quality; use a daily living task analysis for that.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at the time a chore is scheduled on a shared family calendar or phone reminder, the student will independently start the scheduled chore (such as loading the dishwasher or taking out recycling) within 5 minutes of the reminder without a family member asking in at least 6 of 7 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly, from a home log.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Task Initiation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
