Take the first work bin and get going
When to use this goal
For students with significant support needs who use a structured work system (bins on the left, finished basket on the right) and need an adult hand-over-hand to take the first bin. The tasks in the bins must be mastered ones. Present levels, not grade, decide the number of bins.
- Baseline
- Record each work station session over a week with the least prompt needed for the student to take the first bin and start: independent, gesture, picture match, or physical help. Use only bins with tasks the student already does well.
- Tips
- Use a least-to-most prompt order and wait 5 seconds between levels. Record the prompt level on a strip at the station. Keep the bin tasks mastered so the data show starting, not learning. Prompts come from behind or the side so the student's attention stays on the work.
- Limits
- Measures starting the first bin only; moving through all bins is a separate routine goal. New tasks in the bins will lower the data for reasons unrelated to initiation.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the student arrives at the work station and the work system has three bins on the left, the student will take the first bin from the left shelf, open it, and begin the task inside within 30 seconds independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Task Initiation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
