Make a start while the room is busy

6-8, 3-5, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who wait until the room is quiet before starting, so they lose the first part of every work period while classmates settle. The student starts well in a quiet room. Present levels and noise or movement patterns in the room, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
For five work periods, note the room activity at the start (many moving, some, quiet) and whether the student began within 2 minutes. Compare quiet and busy starts; the goal fits when the gap between them is large.
Tips
Headphones and seating are access supports the student can keep; they are listed so the team records when they were used. Count the start as the first written or typed response. A quick room-level note (busy or quiet) next to each data point helps explain the data.
Limits
Room activity is hard to keep constant; look at trends, not single days. Some students need a quiet room for sensory reasons, and the plan should provide it rather than this goal.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when independent work is assigned while classmates are still moving, talking, or getting materials, the student will begin the assigned task within 2 minutes of the direction independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected three times per week.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Task Initiation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
