Check a picture recipe before each step
When to use this goal
For transition-age students with significant support needs whose present levels show steps skipped or repeated when cooking from memory. The picture recipe holds the sequence so the student does not have to. Present levels, not grade, decide the recipe length.
- Baseline
- Each recipe step is one opportunity; score whether the student checked the recipe before starting it. Collect at least three sessions with familiar recipes and note skipped or repeated steps.
- Tips
- Use adult recipe formats: photo cards, a tablet recipe app, or a laminated sheet, not cartoon art. The recipe is a lifelong support and does not need to fade; the goal is using it. Safety steps (stove, knives) follow the class safety plan.
- Limits
- Measures checking the recipe, not cooking skill or safety. Familiar recipes may be done from memory, which is fine; score new or less familiar recipes.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a life skills cooking lesson with a picture recipe of 6 to 8 steps, the student will touch or check off the next picture on the recipe before starting each step independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive cooking sessions, as measured by direct observation collected each cooking session.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
