Choose clothing that matches the weather
When to use this goal
For students who can dress themselves but arrive in shorts in January or a heavy coat in May, or who cannot choose from a closet without an adult. Base the choice on present levels in reading a forecast (icon or temperature) and the family's willingness to let the student choose.
- Baseline
- Present 5 forecasts of different kinds (hot, cold, rain, snow, mild) over a week and record whether the student's choice is reasonable for each. Separate choices that were wrong for the weather from choices the family would not allow, which are a different issue.
- Tips
- Define a reasonable choice in writing before baseline (for example, a coat below a stated temperature, a raincoat or umbrella when rain is forecast). Use the classroom weather routine to build daily opportunities. Accept cultural and personal preferences within safe limits.
- Limits
- Choosing pictures in class does not guarantee the student dresses that way at home; the home condition depends on family reporting. Temperature comfort differs across students; the written standard should allow some range.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given the day's weather forecast (temperature and icon) and a set of clothing pictures or real items to choose from, the student will select clothing items that match the weather conditions independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at the weather board, summarized weekly.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
