Open lunch packages and containers
When to use this goal
For students who sit at lunch waiting for an adult to open each item, which uses up the lunch period and draws attention. Present levels in grasp and two-hand use and the items the family packs decide fit. The target is opening, or asking for help with one specific item.
- Baseline
- List every item in the lunch for 3 days and record whether the student opened it or asked for help in a clear way. Count asking for help as correct for the one or two items the team agrees are too hard; count waiting or crying as not opened.
- Tips
- Ask the family about packaging they can change (pre-opened bags, easy-open lids). Score each item as one opportunity and keep the total near six. Asking for help is a real skill; it is part of the goal, not a failure.
- Limits
- Lunch contents vary daily, so difficulty varies. Does not measure eating. Students on feeding plans follow those plans first.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
