Follow the direction given by a sign in the building or community

When to use this goal

For students who can name signs on cards but walk past the exit sign or through the staff-only door. Base the choice on present levels in sign reading (fn-fa-001) and observation during walks; this is the application step.

Baseline
Plan a route with 6 signs and walk it twice during baseline. Record whether the student looked at and followed each sign without a prompt. Signs the student follows from habit (own classroom door) should be replaced with less familiar ones.
Tips
Plan the route so each sign is a real decision (a push door the student must open, a restroom choice). Rotate routes so the student reads the sign rather than remembering the route. The same data sheet works in the community.
Limits
Opportunities are limited to the signs on the route. Following a sign from habit is not the same as reading it; vary the route to tell the difference.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a walk through the school building past planned signs (exit, push, pull, restroom, keep out, office), the student will follow the direction given by each sign encountered independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive observed walks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during a planned walk or community trip.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Academics.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
