Check bus arrival times in a transit app

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For older students who ride a bus with staff and need to know when the next bus comes without asking. Present levels in phone use and reading times or minutes decide fit. The app is the one the local transit agency supports.

Baseline
Across 2 or 3 trips, ask the student 6 times when the next bus comes and record whether they found the right route and time in the app.
Tips
Save the student's usual stops as favorites. Teach scheduled versus real-time arrivals. Phone battery and data plans are part of the plan.
Limits
Real-time data can be wrong; teach a backup (the printed schedule). Requires a phone and data.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at a bus stop during a community trip, using the transit app on the student's phone, the student will open the app, find the stop and route, and say how many minutes until the next bus independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive community trips, as measured by direct observation collected at each trip using public transit.

Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

  • Observable behavior
  • Criterion
  • Measurement method

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Academics.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
