Cover a cough or sneeze and wash hands
When to use this goal
For students who cough or sneeze into their hands or the air and go on touching shared materials, which matters most for classmates or the student with a weak immune system. Present levels decide fit. A simple routine with clear observable steps.
- Baseline
- During a period when the student has a cough or cold, record each cough or sneeze in two class periods and whether it was covered and hands were cleaned. If the student is healthy, practice drills with a pretend sneeze give a starting point.
- Tips
- Score each cough or sneeze as one opportunity. Keep tissues and sanitizer within reach so the routine is possible. Teach with the whole class where helpful so the student is not singled out.
- Limits
- Opportunities depend on illness, so data come in bursts; plan monitoring for cold season. Not a substitute for the school's illness exclusion rules. This goal never replaces the individualized health plan, medication orders, or an emergency action plan; the nurse, the family, and the student's health care provider decide care, and the goal follows their plan.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when they cough or sneeze during class or small-group work, the student will cover the cough or sneeze with a tissue or the inside of the elbow, throw away any tissue, and clean their hands independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by frequency recording collected during two class periods a day, three days a week.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
