Start home leisure without a reminder

When to use this goal

For older students who have leisure activities they like but wait in their room or at a screen until a family member suggests something. Base the choice on family report. Starting on one's own is a key step toward adult free time.

Baseline
Ask the family to log for two weeks each time the student started an activity other than the default screen on their own. Build the menu with the student. Start from an interest inventory with the student and family, and offer age-matched choices; a preferred repetitive activity is a valid way to relax, not a problem to fix.
Tips
Screens can be on the list; the goal is self-starting a chosen activity. A reminder the student sets for themselves counts as independent. Keep family logging light.
Limits
Family report varies. Count does not show how long each activity lasts.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during free time at home after school or on weekends, the student will independently start a leisure activity from their own list without a reminder from anyone at least 5 times per week, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly, from the family log.

Baseline: 1 times per week.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Leisure & Recreation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
