Join circle-time songs with actions

PKOpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who sit in circle but watch without joining the actions, words, or movements of songs and finger plays. Base the choice on present levels in imitation and in attending; children who do not yet imitate single actions need imitation goals first.

Baseline
Record 5 songs over a few days and mark whether the child did at least three actions without a physical prompt. Note which songs got the most joining; a favorite song is the place to start.
Tips
Define joining in writing (three actions or words). Repetition builds participation, so keep the same songs for weeks. Count a child who does the actions a beat late as joining. Singing is not required; actions count.
Limits
Participation in songs is an early group skill and does not show language comprehension. Children with motor differences may need actions adapted; score the adapted version.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a familiar action song or finger play at circle time, the student will do the actions along with the song independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by direct observation collected daily during circle time.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Preschool & Kindergarten Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
