Copy an adult's action with an object

PKOpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschoolers who do not yet copy what an adult does with toys and materials, which limits learning from models. Present levels from the early intervention report and play observation decide fit. Start with actions that make an effect (shake a shaker, push a car).

Baseline
Model 10 different actions with identical objects over 2 or 3 sessions. Count correct when the student copied the action within about five seconds.
Tips
Use two identical toys so the student has their own. Make it playful and follow the student's interests. Imitation is a base for learning many other skills.
Limits
Does not measure imitation of sounds or words; coordinate with the SLP. Motor needs may limit some actions.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID fn-pk-040.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during play, when the adult shows an action with one of two identical toys and says your turn, the student will copy the action with their own matching object independently in at least 8 of 10 trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected three sessions per week.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Preschool & Kindergarten Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
