Use the toilet during scheduled sits
When to use this goal
For young students who go to the bathroom on schedule and sit, but rarely urinate or have a bowel movement in the toilet while there. Base the choice on a log of results by time of day. Use only when the family and, where relevant, the child's doctor agree that the child is physically ready.
- Baseline
- Keep a private log for two weeks: each sit, the time, the result (urine, bowel movement, none), and any accident between sits. The pattern shows when sits are most likely to work; time the schedule to it before setting the target. Keep the data sheet in a closed folder or on a coded log, never posted where peers or visitors can see it, and agree with the family on the words used for body parts and the routine.
- Tips
- Count each sit with a result in the toilet. Accidents between sits are data for timing the schedule, not failures, and are never met with a penalty. Praise and a short preferred activity after a result help; keep the language neutral and private.
- Limits
- Results depend on fluid intake, diet, medication and health; record changes with the family. Constipation or pain needs medical input, and the toileting plan from the nurse or doctor leads. Frequency per day changes with the schedule, so keep the number of sits steady while measuring.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during scheduled toileting sits across the school day, the student will urinate or have a bowel movement in the toilet with a picture of the routine posted in the stall at least 3 times per school day, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by frequency recording collected daily, at every scheduled sit.
Baseline: 0 times per school day.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Toileting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per school day.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
