Enter the bathroom using a sensory plan
When to use this goal
For students who avoid the bathroom because of the flush noise, hand dryer, echo, smell, or lighting, and who cry, drop to the floor, or refuse at the door. Base the choice on observation and OT input on sensory triggers. The goal gives the student tools and changes the room; it never asks them to put up with distress.
- Baseline
- For one week, record each trip: which bathroom, what happened at the door, and which sounds or features seemed to cause distress. Ask the OT and the family which supports already help. Try a quieter bathroom before setting a target. Keep the data sheet in a closed folder or on a coded log, never posted where peers or visitors can see it, and agree with the family on the words used for body parts and the routine.
- Tips
- An adult can flush after the student leaves the stall if the flush is the trigger, and the student can learn to flush later with ear defenders on. Score an opportunity as met when the student enters and uses the toilet with a support they chose. Let the student leave when they ask; trust grows when leaving is allowed.
- Limits
- Sensory needs change with fatigue and illness, so expect variable days. Does not address triggers the team cannot change (a shared public restroom); plan community trips separately (fn-toi-024).

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during scheduled bathroom trips, with the sensory supports in the plan available (ear defenders, a sticky note over the automatic flush sensor, paper towels instead of the hand dryer), the student will choose a sensory support, enter the bathroom, and use the toilet independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at every scheduled trip.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Toileting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
