Start bathroom trips without a schedule reminder
When to use this goal
For students who are reliable on a toileting schedule and are ready to start trips on their own, which is the step after scheduled toileting. Base the choice on schedule data showing dry checks and results at most sits. The team fades the schedule as self-started trips grow.
- Baseline
- While the schedule is still in place, log any trips the student starts on their own for two weeks. Note how long the student stays dry between scheduled checks; the schedule can be faded only as far as that dry interval allows. Keep the data sheet in a closed folder or on a coded log, never posted where peers or visitors can see it, and agree with the family on the words used for body parts and the routine.
- Tips
- Count trips the student starts before any adult cue and that end with the toilet used. Fade the schedule in steps the team agrees on, and go back a step after several accidents rather than adding pressure. Two to four self-started trips a day is typical; more may be worth a nurse check.
- Limits
- Frequency depends on fluids and health; a very high count is not better. Accidents during fading are expected and are not counted against the student.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a school day with the toileting schedule faded to one check before lunch, the student will start a bathroom trip before any adult cue, by asking or using the class signal, and use the toilet independently at least 2 times per school day, on 8 of 10 consecutive school days, as measured by frequency recording collected daily.
Baseline: 0 times per school day.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Toileting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per school day.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
