Ask for the next task when finished

When to use this goal

For students who finish a task and then sit, wander, or wait silently until someone notices. Present levels in communication (speech, AAC, or a card) decide the request form.

Baseline
Set up 5 short tasks over 2 or 3 work periods and record what the student did when each ended: asked within a minute, waited, or left. Time the wait; a long silent wait is the problem this goal addresses.
Tips
Count the request as met if it comes within one minute of finishing. Teach a short script (I am finished. What is next?). The third condition, finding the supervisor in another room, is the realistic workplace version.
Limits
Short planned tasks create opportunities but are not real work pace; also record real end-of-task events. Students who finish very quickly may need fn-voc-021 (finding a listed task) as a companion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when the assigned task is finished during a school-based job with a supervisor in the room, the student will tell the supervisor the task is done and ask for the next task independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection periods, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during work periods, summarized every five opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocational & Work Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
