Follow posted safety rules at the job site
When to use this goal
For students at job sites with safety rules (wet floor signs, lifting limits, knife and equipment rules, gloves) who know the rules when asked but do not follow them while working. Base the choice on present levels in reading signs (fn-fa-001) and in following directions.
- Baseline
- Pick 6 moments per shift when a rule applies (lifting a box, mopping, using a knife) and record whether the rule was followed without a reminder. Note which rule is broken most; that rule needs direct teaching with the real cue.
- Tips
- Teach each rule at the place it applies with the real equipment. Supervisors must model the rules; students copy what they see. Reporting a hazard (fn-cs-017) pairs with this goal.
- Limits
- Observation points sample the shift; an unobserved lapse is missed. Serious safety concerns require immediate supervision changes, not a goal alone.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a work shift at a site with 5 posted safety rules relevant to the student's tasks, the student will follow each posted safety rule during the shift independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive shifts, as measured by direct observation collected at each shift, across six planned observation points.
Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocational & Work Readiness.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
