Wash hands and glove up before food prep
When to use this goal
For students in food service placements who rinse hands quickly or skip glove changes. Present levels in routines decide whether a picture sign at the sink is used. Food safety makes every step the standard.
- Baseline
- Watch each required handwash on 2 shifts and mark the steps. Note the moments the student misses entirely (after trash, after a break); those need a cue.
- Tips
- Use the site's posted time and rules. Aim for every step every time. Many states require food handler training; check whether the student can take it with accommodations.
- Limits
- Does not cover other food safety steps (temperatures, cross-contact). Observing every handwash takes attention on busy shifts.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, before starting food prep and after any break, trash handling or touching the face, the student will wash hands for the full time, dry them and put on fresh gloves before touching food, performing all 7 steps independently, on 3 consecutive shifts, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected at each shift, scoring every required handwash.
Baseline: 3 of 7 steps independently.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 7 of 7).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
