Put on the protective gear a task needs
When to use this goal
For students in placements with protective gear rules (gloves, goggles, hairnets, aprons, ear protection) who forget or wear gear wrong. Present levels in routines and sensory needs decide supports; sensory-friendly gear options can be discussed with the OT.
- Baseline
- Watch the next 5 tasks that need gear. Count a task only when every required piece was on and worn correctly before the task began.
- Tips
- Every opportunity is the standard for safety gear. If gear is uncomfortable, look for options the site allows (different glove material, soft goggles) rather than pushing tolerance.
- Limits
- Does not replace the site's safety training. Gear rules differ by site.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, before starting a task that requires protective gear, with the gear and a posted gear chart at the station, the student will put on each piece of required gear correctly before starting the task independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection periods, as measured by direct observation collected at each task that requires gear, summarized weekly.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
