Solve written addition within 10 with counters

When to use this goal

For students with significant support needs who add with objects when an adult tells the story but do not yet connect a written equation such as 3 + 4 = __ to the objects. Present levels in numeral identification to 10 and counting out sets decide readiness.

Baseline
A trial is correct when the answer matches the equation. Record which step breaks down (counting the first set, the second set, or counting all).
Tips
Use objects the student finds meaningful. Answers can be selected from numeral cards or a device.
Limits
A counting-all method is a foundation, not an end point. Does not measure solving story problems.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a written addition equation within 10 on a work mat with a box under each numeral and a cup of counters, the student will count out a set for each numeral, push the sets together, count all and write or select the answer independently in at least 6 of 8 trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 8 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
