Answer how many with the last number

When to use this goal

For students who count a set correctly and then, when asked how many, count again or say a random number. Present levels show reliable one-to-one counting to at least 5; age does not decide fit.

Baseline
Present 10 counting opportunities and record what the student does when asked how many: answers with the last number, recounts, or gives another number. Only score sets the student counted correctly, so the goal measures cardinality and not one-to-one errors.
Tips
Recounting is common and not a mistake to punish; model "1, 2, 3, 4. Four! There are four." Use the game condition so the skill shows up in play. Accept device or finger answers.
Limits
Saying the last number can become a habit without meaning; check by asking the student to give the set to a puppet or to make another set with the same number.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, right after counting a set of 3 to 10 objects, when an adult asks "how many?", the student will independently say, sign or show the last number counted without recounting in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Numeracy & Counting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
