Spot named numerals around the classroom
When to use this goal
For young students who name numeral cards at the table but do not find the same numerals on a calendar, a clock, a door or a book page. Present levels in numeral naming, not age, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Test the numerals 1 to 10 on cards first, then in classroom print, and compare. A student who knows them on cards but not in print needs this goal; a student who knows neither needs card practice first.
- Tips
- Use real print: calendar dates, room numbers, page numbers, elevator buttons on a walk. Vary fonts so the student learns that a 4 can look different.
- Limits
- Print in the room varies in size and style, so some items are harder than others. Does not measure writing numerals.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during calendar time, when an adult names a numeral from 1 to 10 on the calendar, the student will point to the named numeral in the classroom print independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Numeracy & Counting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
