Follow directions that name an ordinal position

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who follow simple directions but miss ordinal words in them ("color the fourth balloon", "write your name on the second line"). Present levels in ordinal vocabulary and following directions, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
Give eight directions and record which ordinal words lead to errors and whether the student counts from the correct end.
Tips
Directions with ordinal words show up in class worksheets all the time. Embed them in art, games and centers.
Limits
Following directions also depends on attention and listening skills. Does not measure ordinal words in spoken answers.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a worksheet or art task, when given a direction that names an ordinal position, the student will carry out the direction on the item in the named ordinal position independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Early Numeracy & Counting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
