Use a floor plan to find a location

When to use this goal

For older students who need to read building maps and floor plans (a new school, a mall, a job site) and turn them to match the direction they face. Present levels in left and right and in reading simple maps decide readiness.

Baseline
Use buildings and routes the student does not already know. Record whether the student turns the plan to match their direction.
Tips
Coordinate with orientation and mobility staff for students with visual impairment. Tactile maps can replace print plans.
Limits
Real travel safety is a separate goal.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a floor plan of the school or a community building and a destination, the student will turn the plan to match the direction faced, trace a route, and walk to the destination independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Observable behavior

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Geometry & Spatial Reasoning.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
