Check food safety temperatures with a thermometer

9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students in food service, culinary or job programs who must check refrigerator, freezer or cooked-food temperatures against a posted limit. Present levels in reading a digital or dial thermometer decide readiness.

Baseline
Observe five checks. Every check must be read, compared and logged correctly; one miss is a safety concern.
Tips
The criterion is every check because this is a safety task. Coordinate with the food service supervisor.
Limits
This goal does not replace food safety training or the supervisor's responsibility for food safety.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a food service shift or culinary lab, at each scheduled temperature check, with a posted chart of safe temperatures, the student will read the temperature, compare it to the posted limit, record it on the log, and tell a supervisor when it is out of range independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of checks, as measured by direct observation collected at each scheduled check.

Baseline: 3 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Measurement, Time & Money.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
