Act out a story problem with objects

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students or students with significant support needs who can join and separate sets but do not connect a spoken story to those actions. Present levels in listening comprehension and in counting decide the number range and whether pictures are needed.

Baseline
Tell five short stories across two sessions, half joining and half separating, and record whether the student's actions match the story and whether the final count is right. A student who answers without moving the objects may be guessing from the last number heard.
Tips
Use the student's name and interests in the stories. Keep the language simple and repeat the same frame ("had, then, now") so the structure becomes familiar.
Limits
Measures the concrete stage only; it does not show equation writing or mental solving. Depends on listening comprehension, which may be a separate need.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken one-step story problem within 10 and a set of matching objects (for example, toy cars for a story about cars), the student will show the story with the objects and state the answer independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Math Problem Solving.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
