Drink from an open cup with two hands

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children who drink from a bottle, sippy cup or with an adult holding the cup, and are moving to an open cup. The feeding plan's liquid guidance and observed sips decide fit.

Baseline
Watch five sips at three snacks, scoring each as lifted, sipped and set down alone, spilled, or adult held. Use only the liquid the plan allows, and put a small amount in the cup to start.
Tips
Open cups are the norm at school lunch and in the community, so this skill opens up shared drinks with peers. Small amounts in a small cup keep spills small.
Limits
Food textures, liquid thickness, positioning for safe swallowing and any swallowing precautions come from the student's feeding or swallowing plan, which this goal never changes. Children with a swallowing plan may need a specific cup, flow rate or thickened liquid; follow the SLP's guidance. The goal does not cover pouring.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during snack, given a small open cup with a small amount of the drink allowed by the plan, the student will lift the cup with two hands, take a sip and set the cup back down on the table without tipping it over, with no adult hands on the cup in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 observed snacks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at three snacks a week.
