Run across the gym with coordinated arms and legs
When to use this goal
For students who run flat-footed with arms held stiff or out to the sides, who fall when changing direction, or who cannot run the length of the gym without stopping. Base the choice on observation of running form during PE; the PT and adapted PE teacher should agree on the form criteria.
- Baseline
- Watch five runs and score each against the written form criteria; video with the family's consent makes scoring far more reliable. Note whether form holds for the first half and breaks down, which points to endurance rather than skill. Check shoes and any orthotics.
- Tips
- Running form supports every tag and chase game in PE and on the playground, which is the real goal. Collect data during warm-ups so the student is not singled out. The stopping behavior matters for games with bases and for safety.
- Limits
- Form scoring is subjective without training or video. Students with orthopedic or neuromuscular conditions may have a different efficient running pattern; the PT sets the criteria. Does not measure speed.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when asked to run the length of the gym during PE, the student will run the full distance with arms swinging opposite the legs, a brief flight phase, and no falls independently in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during PE.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
