Imitate body positions and movements of a leader
When to use this goal
For students who do not copy the actions in movement songs, follow-the-leader, or PE warm-ups, standing still or doing a different movement while peers imitate. Base the choice on a probe of 10 movements during baseline; one-part positions come before sequences.
- Baseline
- Show 10 movements with no verbal label and score each as imitated (same body part, same action) or not; then repeat with labels. A big difference means the student follows words better than models, which changes the supports. Watch for mirror-image errors (the student lifts the opposite arm); decide in advance whether those count.
- Tips
- Movement songs, warm-ups, and games like follow-the-leader give daily practice. Imitation is the base for learning every later motor skill from a demonstration, so this goal usually comes first for students who do not copy. Keep the movement set stable for probes.
- Limits
- Imitation involves attention and social engagement as much as motor skill; students who do not look at the model will score low for a different reason. Does not measure quality of movement, only whether it was copied.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 single-step movements or positions shown by the adult (arms up, touch toes, stand on one foot, hop), the student will imitate each movement or position within 5 seconds of the model independently with at least 85% accuracy on movements imitated correctly, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during movement time or therapy.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Gross Motor Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
