Write first name with correctly formed letters
When to use this goal
For students who cannot yet write their name, who write it with letters out of order or reversed, or who can only trace it. The step the student is on (tracing, copying from a model, writing from memory) decides the starting condition; this is a readiness and ownership skill, not an age milestone.
- Baseline
- Collect five name samples from daily work under one condition (model present or absent) and score each letter as correct in formation, order, and direction. Note letters the student writes in uppercase when lowercase is expected, and letters that are reversed; those are the teaching targets. Keep the first samples for comparison.
- Tips
- Name writing happens every day on every paper, so data are free. Decide whether the goal expects a capital first letter and lowercase remainder (most kindergarten teams do) and score consistently. For long names, a nickname the family approves may be a fair first target.
- Limits
- A name is a memorized sequence; writing it does not show general letter formation skill. Scoring formation requires a shared standard for each letter; use the classroom handwriting program's models. Last-name writing can be added as a second goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a blank name line at the top of a worksheet, the student will write the first name with each letter formed correctly, in order, and facing the right direction independently with 100% accuracy on letters in the name formed correctly, on 4 of 5 consecutive daily work samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected daily from the name line on class work, reviewed weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
