Strike a ball from a tee with an adapted bat or racket
When to use this goal
For students who miss a pitched or tossed ball nearly every time and who can join striking units only with adapted equipment: a tee, a larger or lighter ball, a wider bat or racket. A trial with each adaptation during baseline decides which equipment goes in the condition.
- Baseline
- Give 10 swings with each equipment option on one or two days and count hits that travel forward the set distance. Record which option produced the most hits and start there. Note whether the student watches the ball; many misses come from looking at the bat.
- Tips
- The purpose is joining the striking unit and the games that follow, so write the condition with the equipment the student will actually use in class. Fade equipment one change at a time (ball size, then bat width, then tee to toss) in the progression.
- Limits
- Hits that travel forward do not measure direction or distance beyond the line; add a target if the game needs it. Striking a pitched ball is a separate, harder goal. Students who use wheelchairs may strike from the chair with the tee raised, which the adapted PE teacher sets up.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a ball on a tee and a lightweight wide-barrel bat during a striking unit, the student will strike the ball off the tee so that it travels forward at least 10 feet independently in at least 7 of 10 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during a striking unit or adapted PE.
Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
