Throw a softball or shot past a line
When to use this goal
For students preparing for track and field events (a softball throw, a mini javelin, or a shot put) who throw without stepping or use only the arm. Fit depends on a field trial, not grade. Event equipment should match the student's size and strength.
- Baseline
- Measure six throws and set the line a little past the median. Note the step; most added distance comes from the step and the body turn.
- Tips
- Safety: everyone stands behind the thrower. Field events give students who do not like running a way into track.
- Limits
- Implements vary in weight; record them. Not for students with shoulder restrictions without PT input.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, on a field with a distance line set at the student's goal distance, the student will throw the implement with a step on the opposite foot and a full arm motion so it lands past the line independently in at least 4 of 6 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly practices, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 6 throws per practice.
Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
