Spin a hula hoop around the waist

K-2, 3-5FrequencyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who drop the hoop after one turn during PE stations and recess, a fun activity that builds core timing. Fit depends on a trial, not grade.

Baseline
Count turns on three trials and use the best. Larger, heavier hoops turn more slowly and are easier.
Tips
Hoops are cheap and easy to take home. Count turns aloud with the student.
Limits
A narrow skill; use as one part of a fitness plan.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a PE station with a child-sized hula hoop, the student will start the hoop and keep it turning around the waist by moving the hips forward and back independently at least 10 times per trial (best of 3 trials), on 3 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly at PE stations.

Baseline: 1 times per trial (best of 3 trials).

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Physical Fitness & PE Participation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
