Repeat a four-count dance pattern

When to use this goal

For young students who can copy one move at a time but not a short pattern of moves. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. Fits music and movement time in PE or the classroom.

Baseline
Model five patterns on two days and score a pattern correct when all four moves come in order, close to the beat. Note whether errors are in the order or in the moves themselves.
Tips
Use moves the student can already do alone, such as clap, stomp, jump and turn, so the goal is about the pattern. Picture cards help students who remember what they see more easily than what they hear. Change moves often to keep interest.
Limits
Does not score the quality of each move. Music tempo changes difficulty; keep it steady for probes. Not for students still learning single movements; use an imitation goal first.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 5 four-move patterns modeled once by the teacher to a steady beat, the student will perform the four moves in the modeled order on the beat independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive probe days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during music and movement.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sport & Game Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
