Find target items in a busy picture or page
When to use this goal
For students who cannot find a named item in a cluttered picture, a word in a word search, or a tool in a crowded bin, and who give up or guess. Base the choice on a timed find-the-items probe during baseline; this skill underlies locating information on worksheets.
- Baseline
- Give three pages of similar density and count items found in the time. Watch the scanning pattern; random jumping around the page is the usual problem and a systematic pattern can be taught. Score the real-world condition (finding materials) separately with a yes or no per request.
- Tips
- Hidden-picture pages and word searches are easy probes, but the educational purpose is finding the right problem on a worksheet or the right book on a shelf; add those conditions once the probe is steady. Teach a scanning pattern explicitly.
- Limits
- Page density is hard to equate across probes; use a single series. Attention and persistence affect scores as much as perception. Does not measure reading of the words found.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a hidden-picture page with 10 target items listed and 3 minutes, the student will find and mark the target items within the time independently with at least 90% accuracy on target items found within the time, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly on a hidden-picture or word-search probe.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Visual-Motor & Visual-Perceptual Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
