Rate own recorded reading on a prosody rubric

When to use this goal

For older students who read at a workable rate but in a flat or rushed way and do not hear it themselves. Fit depends on whether the student can listen to a recording and describe it, shown in present levels, not on grade.

Baseline
Score five recordings separately and compare the student's ratings with the adult's row by row. Note which rows the student overrates; pace and phrasing are the most common. Use the same rubric wording the student will see.
Tips
Self-rating builds the listening habit that drives prosody change. Keep the recordings private to the student and adult. Pair it with a prosody performance goal so the ratings lead to practice.
Limits
Agreement shows the student can judge prosody, not that their prosody has changed. Rubric ratings are subjective; adults should calibrate with each other first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after recording a 1-minute oral reading of an instructional-level passage and listening to the recording, the student will rate their own reading on each row of a 4-row prosody rubric, matching the adult's rating within 1 point on every row independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive data collection weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Reading Fluency.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
