Sweep a finger left to right under print

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who move a finger right to left, up and down, or at random when asked to show how we read a line. Present levels in pointing to where reading starts (rd-pc-003) show readiness.

Baseline
Record ten lines across two sessions. Count an opportunity when the sweep starts at the left and moves right under the print, even if it runs ahead of the voice.
Tips
Pointers, finger puppets or a craft stick make it fun. Keep lines short and on one row at first. Matching voice to each word is the next step (rd-pc-007).
Limits
Sweeping is not word-by-word matching. Students who read a language written right to left at home may have a different habit; teach both as separate systems.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during shared reading of a book with one line of print per page, when the adult reads a line and asks the student to show how the words go, the student will sweep a finger under the line of print from left to right while the adult reads it independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Print Concepts & Early Literacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
