Read logos and labels from daily life
When to use this goal
For young students or emerging readers who do not yet attend to print around them. Reading familiar logos is one of the first ways children show that print carries meaning. Base the choice on observation; this is a preschool and early functional goal.
- Baseline
- Ask the family which logos and labels the student sees regularly and build the set from those. Test with the full logo first, then the words alone in plain print, to see whether the student is reading the word or the colors and shape. Accept a functional response (says milk for a milk carton) and write that rule down.
- Tips
- Use real items and photos from the student's own world. The plain-print condition is the bridge to conventional word reading. Families can collect labels at home, which makes this an easy home-school goal.
- Limits
- Reading a logo by its color and shape is not word reading, and many students lose the word when the logo is removed; the progression addresses this. Sets are individual, so scores are not comparable across students. Does not measure decoding.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 photographs of familiar logos, packages, and signs from the student's community (a store, a cereal box, a stop sign), the student will say what each logo or label says or stands for independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
