Button and menu words on school devices

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who rely on an adult or on icon guessing to navigate school apps because they cannot read the button and menu words (log in, next, back, submit, save, open). Present levels decide the word set.

Baseline
Observe 10 navigation moments in real assignments and note whether the student read the word, guessed from position or icon, or asked for help. Build the word list from the apps the student actually uses.
Tips
Directly supports independence in class. Share the word list with families so the same words are read at home.
Limits
Icons and layouts help some students without reading; check reading on a printed list too. App updates move buttons around.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, while using a school laptop or tablet during a class assignment, when a button or menu word is needed to move on, the student will read the button or menu word and select the one that matches the step independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, on 3 of 4 observed sessions, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Observable behavior

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
