Read and answer a text message

When to use this goal

For older students with emerging reading who are starting to use a phone and need to read short messages from family, staff, or a job coach (pick up at 3, bus late, call me, good job). Present levels decide the word set; messages use taught words.

Baseline
Write messages with the family's input so they match real messages. Count a message correct when the student reads or acts on it correctly and replies sensibly. Note whether the student uses text-to-speech; that is a fine access choice to plan for.
Tips
Teach phone safety alongside this goal. Families should agree to the practice messages. Use the student's own device when possible.
Limits
Real messages contain abbreviations and emoji that vary; include the ones the student will see. Practice messages are easier than real ones.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a short text message on a phone or tablet written with taught words, the student will read the message aloud or show what it says, then send a reply that fits independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sight Word Recognition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
