Reply to a peer's text or chat message with a related response
When to use this goal
For secondary students whose peers message them (plans, questions, group project chats) and who do not reply, reply days later, or reply with something unrelated, so peers stop messaging. Base the choice on the student's and family's account and device access.
- Baseline
- With the student's permission, review a week of school-approved threads for peer messages directed at the student and code each: related reply the same day, late reply, unrelated reply, or none. Set up 3 planned messages from a peer partner. Ask the student what makes replying hard.
- Tips
- An opportunity is a peer message directed at the student that invites a reply. Score correct when a related reply is sent the same school day. A short reply ("Yes, 3pm works") is fully correct. Review threads with the student, never without them. Confine the goal to school-approved platforms and threads; personal social media is outside it.
- Limits
- Depends on peers messaging the student and on device access; planned messages fill gaps. Reviewing messages raises privacy concerns; the student must agree and can choose which threads to show. Does not measure the quality of the relationship.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when a peer sends them a message in a school-approved group chat or project thread, the student will reply to the message within the same school day with a response that answers the question or relates to what the peer wrote independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly by reviewing the thread with the student's permission.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
