Offer help to a peer who needs it
When to use this goal
For students who notice a peer struggling but do not act, or who take over the peer's work instead of offering. Base the choice on observation during group tasks. For students who already have the skill the peer needs.
- Baseline
- Observe group work and transitions and record each time a peer near the student visibly needs help, with the student's response: offers and helps, helps without asking, watches, or does not notice. Set up 3 planned opportunities with a coached peer to confirm.
- Tips
- An opportunity is a peer need within the student's view (defined by the observer). Score correct when the student asks before helping and helps in the way the peer accepts, within 1 minute. Taking over without asking is scored as not correct, since the asking step is the point. Coach peers to accept or decline clearly.
- Limits
- Noticing is hard to observe; the observer decides what was in view. Over-helping can become intrusive; the asking step protects the peer's independence. Does not measure the quality of the help.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
